Both Sony and Canon are electronics device manufacturers. Some of the products they make are good. Some are not so good.
Sony and Canon are not models of camcorders. For instance, don’t waste your time or money on a consumer DVD based camcorder. It does not matter if it is made by Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung or any other manufacturer. DVD based camcorders barely make good doorstops and should no longer be sold.
If you’ll ever be in a high altitude environment, don’t buy a hard drive based camcorder. Anything over about 9,800 feet is considered high altitude. The camcorder hard drive heads will park and not grant video capture. It does not matter if it is made by Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Samsung or any other manufacturer. The camcorder hard drive sensors are doing their job.
If you’re ever in a high vibration environment - very loud crowds, very loud music (amplified or not) very loud engines, etc, do not purchase a hard drive camcorder. The vibration will also cause the hard drive heads to park and not grant video capture. It does not matter if it is made by Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Samsung or any other manufacturer. The camcorder hard drive sensors are doing their job. Disabling the drop sensor might work, but you also run the danger of causing a hard drive crash.
Limit your investigation to flash memory or miniDV tape based camcorders and you’ll limit your exposure to known problems of the other storage media. Canon, Sony and Panasonic are the top tier vendors for consumer miniDV tape and flash memory camcorders.
