Answer:
What is your budget and what will you be editing on?

When I started doing video for a hobby a few years back, I got a Canon Elura60. The equivalent today is probably the Canon ZR900 or ZR930. All are miniDV tape based camcorders so your computer needs a firewire port for transferring DV format video. If your personal does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one.

If there is not firewire port and no expansion slot, then the next-best would be flash memory. The Canon DS10, FS11 and FS100 are recommended.

Sony camcorders don't get intersting until you get to the HDR-HC9. Canon's HV30 is a good one, too… Panasonic camcorders get interesting beyond the DVX100. Stay away from DVD based camcorders (poor video quality, editing problems) and hard drive camcorders should be avoided, too (issues with vibration and altitude).

This day, I use a Sony HDR-HC1 and a HDR-FX1…
